Nursery and Preschool Positions

Nursery Caregiver

A Nursery Caregiver cares for, plays with and prays for each child in the Infant Nursery or Walkers’ Playroom. Through regular, consistent service, Nursery Caregivers build relationships with families, allowing parents to attend worship service knowing their baby is in a safe and loving environment.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Nursery & Preschool Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or on a monthly rotation
  • Qualifications: Able to joyfully play with babies and toddlers, comfort them and meet their needs.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Nursery Substitute

A Nursery Substitute serves in the Infant Nursery or Walkers’ Playroom when weekly volunteers are absent from service.  Just like consistent Nursery Caregivers, Nursery Substitutes provide parents with the opportunity to attend worship knowing their baby is in a safe and loving environment.  They care for, play with and pray for each child in our nursery classrooms.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Nursery & Preschool Director
  • Time commitment: Serve on an as-needed basis
  • Qualifications: Able to joyfully play with babies and toddlers, comfort them and meet their needs.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Preschool Leader

A Preschool Leader teaches kids that God made them, God loves them and Jesus wants to be their friend forever. They lead kids to discover these truths through Bible stories, activities, music, games and prayer.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Nursery & Preschool Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly for 2-4 hours (prep time, class time, connecting with families and praying for kids)
  • Qualifications: Enjoy shepherding, teaching and connecting with kids. Patience, organization, compassion and a calm spirit in the middle of fun chaos are keys to this position.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Preschool Helper

A Preschool Helper shepherds kids to stay on-track while the Preschool Leader presents the Bible story and explains supporting activities. Helpers encourage children to sit and listen during story time and they help kids with activities and crafts that reinforce the weekly Bible truth.

  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or on a monthly rotation
  • Qualifications: Enjoy shepherding, teaching and connecting with young kids. Able to gently steer kids toward appropriate classroom behaviors.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Preschool Substitute

A Preschool Substitute serves in a preschool classrooms when weekly volunteers are absent from service.  Just like consistent Preschool Leaders and Helpers, Preschool Substitutes lead kids to discover God through Bible stories, activities, music, games and prayer.

Elementary Opportunities

Small Group Leader

A Small Group Leader invests deeply in the lives of a specific group of children.  Over the elementary years, kids begin to take personal ownership of their faith, rather than it being a family choice. Small Group Leaders facilitate a healthy and fun group setting to help kids embrace a relationship with Jesus. During service time, Small Group Leaders reinforce the teaching presented in large group, facilitate activities and lead discussions to help kids apply Biblical truths to their own lives.  In addition, they develop a mentoring relationship with each child in the group and help kids build friendships with each other.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Elementary Small Group Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly for 2-4 hours (prep time, class time, connecting with families and praying for kids).

Small Group Helper

Small Group Substitute

A Small Group Substitute leads a group when weekly volunteers are absent from service.  Small Group Substitutes reinforce the teaching presented in large group, facilitate activities and lead discussions to help kids apply Biblical truths to their own lives.

  • Time commitment: Serve on an as-needed basis.
  • Qualifications:  Enjoy shepherding, teaching and connecting with elementary-aged kids.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Large Group Leader (God’s Big Backyard and Xploration Station)

A Large Group Leader uses creative storytelling and lively worship to make God’s word come alive on the stages of God’s Big Backyard (Kindergarten-2nd grade) or Xploration Station (3rd and 4th grade).

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Worship Director
  • Time commitment: Serve 10 hours one week per month then have three weeks off. During your week, personalize the script from assigned curriculum, rehearse, and lead during the first 45-minutes of three weekend services.
  • Qualifications:  Comfortable in an up-front role, desire to teach using creative communication and ability to praise God through music and motions.
  • Training: One-on-one coaching is provided for both preparation and stage time. You’ll move from a period of collaborative leading to leading alone with on-the-job coaching by the Children’s Worship Director.  Group training events occur periodically.

Large Group Leader (Hangar 56)

A Hangar 56 Large Group Leader presents kid-sized sermons to fifth and sixth graders in versatile ways from preteen-friendly exegesis to illustrative games and beyond.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Worship Director
  • Time commitment: Serve 6-8 hours one week per month then have three weeks off. During your week, personalize the script from assigned curriculum, rehearse, and lead during the first 30-minutes of three weekend services.
  • Qualifications:  Comfortable in an up-front role, desire to teach using creative communication and passion for increasing your own Bible knowledge.
  • Training: One-on-one coaching for reaching this age group is provided both during writing/preparation and for stage time. You’ll move from a period of collaborative leading to leading alone with on-the-job coaching by the Children’s Worship Director.  Group training events occur periodically.

Large Group Helper

A Large Group Helper assists the Large Group Leader in skits, activities and songs that require more than one person. Large Group Helpers use their creative talents to make songs and stories come alive in a way more impactful than what one person could do alone.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Worship Director
  • Time commitment: Serve as needed. During scheduled week, rehearse at home and on-site and perform at three weekend services.
  • Qualifications:  Comfortable in an up-front role and interested in developing skills in the area offering help (music and motions, acting, etc.).
  • Training: On-the-job training by the Large Group Leader and Children’s Worship Director

Worship Leader (Hangar 56)

A Hangar 56 Worship Leader helps fifth and sixth graders understand that praising God through music is fun and meaningful. Hangar 56 Worship Leaders play live music on guitar or keyboard while singing and while earning kids’ buy-in through humor and other tactics. Serve as an individual talented in singing while playing, as a duo (one partner sings while the other plays), or as a team/band.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Worship Director
  • Time commitment: Serve at once service weekly or on a monthly rotation. Arrive 30 minutes before service for sound check. Rehearse at home as needed. Actual performance time is 15 minutes.
  • Qualifications:  Passion for praising God through a good singing voice and solid instrumental skills.  Flexibility, good humor, and a calm spirit in the middle of fun chaos are keys to this position.
  • Training: One-on-one coaching for reaching the age group, song selection list and chords are provided. Musical training is not provided. Group training events occur periodically.

Support Positions

Behind-the-scenes Support Person

A Behind-The-Scenes Support Person uses administrative or creative gifts to support Children’s Ministry during the week in various ways. Support people may assemble materials or crafts for weekend serves, do data entry, shop for supplies, etc. This position can be custom-tailored to whatever it is that you do best.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Ministry Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or monthly on weekdays.
  • Qualifications:  Organized, independent, and gifted in the area offering help.
  • Training: Hands-on training by staff.

Check-in Team Member

A Check-In Team Member provides a warm and friendly welcome to guests and regular attendees. Check-In Team Members use computer touch screens to check children into services and register new families. When time permits, they show families around the church and help kids get settled into their rooms.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Nursery & Preschool Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or on a rotation from 30 minutes before service to 30 minutes into service.
  • Qualifications:  Friendly, patient, comfortable talking to new people, and ability to stay calm during technical glitches.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Construction and Decor Project Manager

A Construction & Decor Project Manager uses artistic or construction talents to enhance our vibrant environments for kids. Project Managers construct large scale items like stages and walls, make props, sew curtains and costumes, decorate themed sets, paint murals, etc. depending on their area of giftedness.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Ministry Director or other Children’s Ministry staff
  • Time commitment: Commitment varies based on the project.
  • Qualifications:  Gifted in the area offering help, innovative, dependable, able to execute a project within an agreed upon timeframe, works well both independently and collaboratively.
  • Training: Varies based on the project and previous experience.

Hallway Monitor

A Hallway Monitor ensures that kids are safe during service times and allows leaders to fully focus on their classes. They patrol the hallways near children’s rooms and are available to page parents, monitor restrooms, run supplies between rooms, let leaders know when service is almost over and respond to crises.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Ministry Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or on a rotation.
  • Qualifications:  Extremely responsible, able to react quickly to unexpected situations, comfortable talking with both kids and adults.
  • Training: Hands-on training is provided by staff and seasoned volunteers as well as through periodic group training events.

Special Needs Buddy

A Special Needs Buddy partners with the family of a child who needs extra assistance to attend church. A buddy work with parents to become familiar with the child’s unique needs so that buddy and child can participate in Children’s Ministry to the greatest extent possible while the parents enjoy adult services.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Ministry Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly with  assigned child.
  • Qualifications:  Patient, loving, and comfortable with special needs children.
  • Training: General Children’s Ministry training is provided by staff as well as through periodic group training events. Coaching on the child’s needs is provided by the parents.

Stage Tech

A Stage Tech utilizes audio/visual (AV) equipment to enhance the elementary large group environments of God’s Big Backyard, Xploration Station and Hangar 56. A/V elements include Media Shout presentation software on a personal computer (PC), sound system, and stage lighting.

  • Who the Position Reports To: Children’s Worship Director
  • Time commitment: Serve weekly or on a monthly rotation.
  • Qualifications:  Technical intuition with PC and AV equipment and excellent attention to detail in the midst of distraction.
  • Training: Training is provided by staff, experienced team members and video tutorials. You’ll move from a period of observation to running the show with assistance to working independently.
