Rhythms of Jesus – Week 5: The Discipline of Fasting

Day 33: Fasting for Breakthrough

Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah faced an overwhelming battle. Instead of panicking, they turned to God in fasting and prayer, seeking His help. And God responded with victory.

Fasting for breakthrough is not about trying to manipulate God into answering our prayers. It is about surrendering to Him, acknowledging our dependence, and trusting Him to move in His perfect way.

If food fasting is not right for you, consider fasting from distractions that hinder your spiritual growth. What might it look like to set aside time each day to seek God in prayer, silence, and reflection? Breakthrough happens not in what we give up but in what we gain—deeper trust in the Lord’s provision.

Key Verses:
Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him. ~ 2 Chronicles 20:3-4

Reflection and Expression:

  • Identify where you need breakthrough. What situation feels too big for you?
  • Trust that He is working. Even when you don’t see immediate answers, believe He is faithful.
