Day 1

Scripture: Genesis 1:1-3 NIV
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Story from the Blue Seats:
I loved sleepovers at Margaret’s home. The Reidy’s house was big and they had TWO televisions so we were able to pick what show we wanted to watch in the bedroom. Each sibling had their own room and her mom let her pick a snack just for the sleepover and Margaret had picked potato chips and root beer which was a favorite of mine.

Margaret had picked a movie that I was not familiar with to watch. It was a “grown-up movie” about something lurking in the dark. I was afraid to watch it but I didn’t want Margaret to think I was scared. I spent the movie half eyes wide open yet, eyes closed tightly with my 8 year old heart racing.

That night, the dark wasn’t just dark anymore. It was alive—filled with shifting shadows, imagined figures, and the terrifying thought of something waiting to pounce. It took years for the lingering memory to fade and that happened as an adult new believer.

It was on the hearing for the first time that Jesus said, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) Later he says that HE is the light (John 8:12) and conveys his identity and mission.
Those were healing words to my scarred inner being. I no longer held the darkness but could see the light.

I’ve had many other darkness come my way since then but I always know in my heart that the light will overcome it!
