Book of Galatians
Day 2
Unpacking Key Themes
For a small book, there are quite a few key themes in the book of Galatians. First, let’s unpack the main themes before reading the book. You can read the passages of Scripture that apply to those themes below.
Justification by Faith Alone:
One of the central themes of Galatians is the concept of justification by faith alone. Paul emphasizes that salvation is not earned through adherence to the Jewish law or by human effort but is received as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Galatians 2:16).
Freedom in Christ:
Paul passionately defends the freedom believers have in Christ. He contrasts this freedom with the bondage of legalism, declaring that Christ has set believers free from the curse of the law (Galatians 5:1).
Unity in Christ:
Paul emphasizes the unity of believers in Christ, regardless of their ethnic or social backgrounds. He argues against the necessity of circumcision and other Jewish customs for Gentile believers, affirming that all who are in Christ are one (Galatians 3:28).
Walking in the Spirit:
Paul teaches that believers are called to live by the power of the Holy Spirit, producing the fruit of the Spirit in their lives (Galatians 5:22-23). He contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, urging believers to walk in love and obedience to God.
The Cross of Christ:
Throughout Galatians, Paul exalts the cross of Christ as the central focus of the Christian faith. He declares that he will boast only in the cross of Christ, through which he has been crucified to the world and the world to him (Galatians 6:14).
Faith Working Through Love:
While emphasizing justification by faith, Paul also underscores the importance of faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6). True faith manifests itself in love for God and neighbor, leading to a life of service and compassion.
