Rhythms of Jesus – Week 6: The Discipline of Service
Day 41: Serving the Least of These
In Matthew 25:40, Jesus gives us a powerful reminder that every act of service, no matter how small, is an act of love toward Him. He identifies with the “least of these”—the marginalized, the poor, the oppressed, and the forgotten. When we serve others, especially those who are often overlooked, we are serving Christ Himself.
This is the heart of the gospel: God doesn’t only see the rich or the powerful, but He is especially drawn to the brokenhearted, the hurting, and the lost. And He calls us to do the same—to serve others with the same compassion and love that He shows us. It’s easy to serve those who can repay us or those we feel comfortable with, but the true test of our love lies in how we treat those who can offer us nothing in return.
Jesus’ words challenge us to look beyond ourselves and see the inherent dignity in every person, regardless of their circumstances. Our service is not about the recipient’s worthiness, but about our obedience to Christ’s call to love unconditionally. When we serve “the least of these,” we are drawing nearer to the heart of God.
Key Verse:
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ ~ Matthew 25:40
Thoughts and Actions:
- Take a moment today to reflect on who the “least of these” might be in your life or community.
- Is there someone who is in need of your time, help, or care? It could be a homeless person, someone in a difficult financial situation, or even someone who feels alone or forgotten. How can you serve them today? Remember, in serving them, you are serving Christ.
- Look for an opportunity to serve someone who is often overlooked or in need. Whether it’s through a kind gesture, a helping hand, or simply listening, serve them with the love of Christ, knowing that in doing so, you are serving Him.
