Rhythms of Jesus – Week 7: The Discipline of Sabbath

Day 46: Ceasing from Striving

In our world, striving and busyness are often seen as signs of dedication and success. We work long hours, sacrifice our rest, and push ourselves beyond our limits, believing that our worth is tied to our productivity. However, Psalm 127:2 reminds us that, ultimately, our striving can be in vain if it comes at the cost of our well-being and our relationship with God.

God has created us with limits and has designed us to need rest. While work is important, it is not the sole purpose of our lives. We are not called to exhaust ourselves in endless striving; we are called to trust God and rest in His provision. When we toil for the wrong reasons—out of fear, anxiety, or the pressure to achieve—it becomes a futile pursuit. But when we trust God, He gives us the grace to rest, knowing that He is in control and will provide for all our needs.

God invites us to cease from striving and to trust that He is working on our behalf. He grants sleep and rest to those He loves, and in His rest, we find peace. The discipline of Sabbath teaches us to surrender our need to control and to let God be the one who provides and sustains us.

Key Verse:
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves. ~ Psalm 127:2

Application:
Take a moment today to reflect on areas of your life where you may be over-striving. Are there things you’re trying to accomplish on your own, without trusting God’s provision or timing? Consider how you can let go of the pressure to “do it all” and instead rest in God’s love and faithfulness. Trust that He will provide what you need and give you the strength to do what He has called you to do.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I confess that I often fall into the trap of striving and toiling in my own strength. Help me to trust in Your provision and to surrender my need for control. Teach me to cease from striving and to rest in Your love and care. I know that You are faithful, and I trust that You will provide for me in Your perfect timing. Thank You for the gift of rest and for teaching me that my worth is not in my work, but in Your love. Amen.
