Rhythms of Jesus – Week 2: The Discipline of Scripture
Day 14: Hungering for God’s Word
Just as our bodies need food to survive, our souls need the nourishment of God’s Word. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus reminds us that life is sustained not just by physical bread but by every word that comes from God. His Word is our spiritual sustenance—it feeds us, strengthens us, and sustains us in every season of life.
We live in a world full of distractions and quick fixes, but nothing can satisfy the deep hunger of our souls like Scripture. When we neglect God’s Word, we become spiritually weak, vulnerable to temptation, doubt, and fear. But when we immerse ourselves in it, we are filled with wisdom, peace, and the strength to walk in faith.
A true hunger for God’s Word isn’t just about duty—it’s about desire. Just as we crave food when we are hungry, we should long for Scripture because we recognize how much we need it. Psalm 119:103 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” The more we consume God’s Word, the more we develop a deep craving for His truth.
If you find yourself lacking hunger for Scripture, ask God to give you a renewed desire for His Word. Start small—read a passage, meditate on a verse, and invite God to speak to you through it. Over time, your appetite for His truth will grow, and you’ll experience the joy of being nourished by His presence.
Key Verse:
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ~ Matthew 4:4
Reflection:
- Do you hunger for God’s Word as much as you hunger for food or other daily necessities? What distractions might be dulling your appetite for Scripture?
