Rhythms of Jesus – Week 2: The Discipline of Scripture

Day 9: Meditating on God’s Word

Meditation is often associated with emptying the mind, but biblical meditation is the opposite—it is the practice of filling our minds with the truths of God’s Word. In Psalm 1:2, we see that a righteous person delights in God’s law and meditates on it day and night. This isn’t about merely reading the Bible; it’s about allowing God’s Word to take root in our hearts, shaping our thoughts, our actions, and our entire worldview.

Meditating on Scripture means reflecting deeply on its meaning, allowing it to marinate in our minds and hearts. It’s not a quick glance or a passing thought; it’s a slow and intentional pondering. As we meditate on God’s Word, we give Him room to speak to us, revealing deeper insights and applying His truth to our lives in ways we might not expect.

When we meditate on the Bible, it becomes a constant companion—guiding our thoughts throughout the day, bringing us peace, conviction, encouragement, and wisdom. It’s like chewing on a piece of food, savoring it, and allowing it to nourish us. The more we meditate on Scripture, the more we experience the fullness of what God has for us.

Key Verse:
“… but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” ~ Psalm 1:2

Reflection:

  • How often do you take time to meditate on God’s Word, rather than just reading it quickly?
