Rhythms of Jesus – Week 1: The Discipline of Prayer
Day 6: Praying for Others
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people…” ~ 1 Timothy 2:1
Prayer is often seen as a way to bring our own needs before God, but Scripture also teaches us the importance of praying for others—this is known as intercession. In today’s verse, Paul urges believers to intercede for all people, which means standing in the gap on behalf of others, bringing their needs, struggles, and joys before God.
Interceding for others is a powerful act of love. It’s about looking beyond our own lives and asking God to work in the lives of those around us. Whether praying for friends, family, leaders, or even strangers, intercessory prayer invites us to partner with God in His plans for others.
Jesus Himself modeled intercessory prayer when He prayed for His disciples and for us, even before His death. He prayed, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message” (John 17:20). Jesus prayed not only for His immediate followers but for all believers throughout time.
When we intercede, we align ourselves with God’s heart for others. We ask for His intervention, guidance, healing, and blessing in their lives. Intercessory prayer also helps cultivate a heart of compassion and unity, reminding us that we are part of a greater community and that we all need God’s help.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of intercession. I lift up those around me who are in need—whether it’s physical healing, emotional peace, or spiritual strength. I ask that You would intervene in their lives and provide what they need. Help me to have a heart of compassion and to remember that I am called to pray not only for myself but for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
