Rhythms of Jesus – Week 5: The Discipline of Fasting

Day 31: Hungering for God More Than Food

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He responded with these words: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” He reminded us that our deepest needs are not just physical but spiritual.

Fasting helps us reorder our desires. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves that our true satisfaction comes from God, not from temporary things. While food sustains our bodies, it is God who sustains our souls.

If you struggle with fasting, remember that it is not about deprivation—it is about redirection. Each moment of longing is an opportunity to turn your heart toward God, allowing Him to fill you with His presence and truth.

For those who struggle with food-related challenges, this verse is a beautiful reminder that God’s provision is about more than physical needs. If fasting from meals is not life-giving for you, perhaps you can “fast” from things that fill but do not satisfy—empty entertainment, unhelpful thoughts, or distractions that keep you from deep communion with God.

Key Verse:

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ~ Matthew 4:4

Reflection and Expression:

  • Reflect on your spiritual hunger. What do you truly crave in your heart?
  • Feast on God’s Word. Spend time reading and meditating on Scripture.
  • Redirect your desires. When you feel hunger or discomfort, use it as a prompt to pray.
  • Thank God for His provision. He is your sustainer, both physically and spiritually.
