Rhythms of Jesus – Week 6: The Discipline of Service

Day 37: Serving with a Pure Heart

In the hustle and bustle of life, it can be easy to get lost in the grind and forget why we do what we do. Whether it’s at work, in ministry, or in the care of our families, we may find ourselves serving without thought, our hearts becoming disconnected from the deeper purpose of our actions. In Colossians 3:23-24, Paul reminds us of the true essence of service: when we serve, we are serving the Lord.

Serving with a pure heart means that we approach each task, no matter how small, with the intention of honoring God. It requires us to set aside personal gain or approval and focus on His glory. This isn’t about perfection in the task itself but the purity of our motivation—doing it with all our heart as if Christ Himself is the one receiving our offering.

There’s a certain freedom that comes with this understanding. When we serve with pure hearts, we’re not bound by human expectations or recognition. We are assured that our inheritance is from God, not from earthly rewards. This brings joy in the process itself, knowing that God sees our faithfulness even in the most mundane tasks.

Key Verses:
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ~ Colossians 3:23-24

Thoughts and Actions:

  • Take a moment today to evaluate your heart. Are there areas of your life where you’ve become weary, frustrated, or disconnected from the joy of serving?
  • Find one task today—no matter how small—and offer it to God as an act of worship. As you do, reflect on the privilege of serving the One who has given you everything.
