Rhythms of Jesus – Week 5: The Discipline of Fasting
Day 32: Drawing Near to God Through Fasting
Fasting is a way to draw near to God. It is a time of removing distractions and intentionally seeking His presence. James 4:8 gives us a beautiful promise: when we come near to God, He responds by coming near to us.
When we fast, we shift our focus away from ourselves and toward God. It is an act of faith that reminds us He is always present, always available, and always willing to meet us where we are.
For some, fasting from food is a powerful way to refocus on God. For others, fasting might mean stepping away from busyness, excessive media consumption, or negative thinking patterns. The key is intentionality—choosing to remove something that competes for our attention and replacing it with time in God’s presence.
Key Verse:
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ~ James 4:8
Reflection and Expression:
- What draws you away from God? Identify distractions in your life.
- Spend time in worship. Use your fast as a time to praise and connect with God.
- Trust in His nearness. Even when you don’t feel it, God is close to you.
