Rhythms of Jesus – Week 3: The Discipline of Solitude

Day 20: Overcoming Distractions

Martha was doing good work. She was serving Jesus, making sure everything was in order, preparing food, and showing hospitality. Yet, in the midst of all her busyness, she was missing what truly mattered—simply being with Jesus. Her sister, Mary, on the other hand, sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to His words, choosing presence over productivity.

How often do we find ourselves in Martha’s shoes? We are consumed with responsibilities, worries, and distractions, constantly moving from one task to another. While work, family, and obligations are important, they can sometimes pull us away from what matters most—spending time with God.

Jesus gently reminded Martha that only one thing is needed—to be with Him. He did not rebuke her for serving, but He did point out that Mary had chosen what is better. Solitude with God is not about neglecting responsibilities, but about prioritizing Him in the midst of them.

What distractions keep you from time with Jesus? Maybe it’s a busy schedule, social media, or even a mind that won’t slow down. Today, God is inviting you to step away from the noise and choose what is better—His presence.

Key Verses:
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” ~ Luke 10:41-42

Putting It into Practice:

  • Schedule intentional time with God. Whether it’s in the morning, during a break, or before bed, set aside time to focus solely on Him. Practice being fully present. When you pray or read Scripture, resist the urge to multitask. Give God your undivided attention.

Distractions will always be there, but we can choose, like Mary, to prioritize the presence of Jesus. When we do, we’ll find the peace, wisdom, and rest our souls truly need.
