Rhythms of Jesus – Week 5: The Discipline of Fasting

Day 29: Why We Fast

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that Jesus assumes His followers will practice. He says, “When you fast”, not “If you fast”, highlighting that this is meant to be a natural part of a believer’s walk with God. But why do we fast?

At its core, fasting is about drawing closer to God. It is not about proving our devotion or seeking recognition, but about humbling ourselves and making space for His presence. By stepping away from distractions—whether food, technology, or another habit—we create room to seek God with greater focus.

Jesus warns against fasting for the wrong reasons. If our fasting is for show or self-righteousness, we miss the point. True fasting is about deepening our dependence on God, seeking His will, and allowing Him to transform us from the inside out.

If fasting from food is not physically or spiritually healthy for you, know that the heart of fasting is not deprivation but devotion. Consider other ways to set something aside for a time to draw near to God—perhaps fasting from distractions like social media, entertainment, or excess noise. The goal is to create space for Him to fill.

Key Verses:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. ~ Matthew 6:16-18

Reflection and Expression:

  • Examine your heart. What is your motivation for fasting?
  • Choose a meaningful fast. Set aside something that allows you to seek God more intentionally.
  • Focus on relationship over ritual. Let your fasting be a time of connection, not obligation.
  • Seek God in prayer. Use your fast as an opportunity to listen to His voice.

Fasting is a powerful way to reset our spiritual focus. As you embrace this discipline, may it lead you into deeper dependence on God and a greater awareness of His presence in your life.
