I hear over and over in this season of COVID-19, “Well, we’re all in the same boat.”
That just didn’t sit well with me. Because as I talk with many of you, there are things that you are facing personally that are very different from one person to the next.
For some, loneliness is a daily struggle, yet for others, it would be nice not to have so much togetherness.
For some of us, finances are not a problem but for others the fear of unemployment is real.
For some, it is grieving of the death of a loved one with little closure. For others, it is celebrating the recovery from illness when things looked grim.
For some, it is a time of rest and reconnection. For others, it means more hours away from home and more exposure to the virus.
Recently, I read a more accurate version of the boat analogy. It’s was a long article but the gist of it was that we are in the same storm but we are all in different boats.
The same storm is moving around us but our boats are very unique because we are all dealing with our own personal realities.
But whatever the boat, Jesus meets us in the storm. In Matthew 14:22, we see Jesus did that same thing with the disciples when they found themselves out on the stormy sea. He walked out onto the sea to their boat and got in it with them.
Our boats are different. He knows what we are carrying. He is saying, “I see you. I am here with you. Be courageous and don’t be afraid.”
